Manchester United legend Gary Neville has unveiled a pioneering degree programme designed to offer unparalleled insights into the football industry.
The University Academy 92 (UA92) has introduced the Business of Football degree, a revolutionary course that combines both on-field and off-field learning. The curriculum covers essential areas such as governance, player welfare, talent recruitment, sales, marketing, fan engagement, operations, and the latest advancements in artificial intelligence applications within football.
This innovative degree was developed collaboratively by Gary Neville, course leader Spencer Fearn—who was once Britain’s youngest professional football club owner—and UA92’s associate dean Dr. Firoz Bhaiyat.
Gary Neville commented,
“This degree addresses a vital gap in football education across the UK. Our students won’t just learn about football business; they will experience it firsthand. Thanks to our partnerships and the involvement of the Class of ’92, students will have direct access to top-level CEOs and chairpersons of football clubs, opening genuine career pathways.”
“We’re not only teaching the traditional football business model; we’re also showing how clubs can innovate, unlocking new revenue streams from estate planning to social media strategies. The football landscape is rapidly evolving, and our graduates will be prepared to lead that transformation.”
“This programme benefits not only UA92 students but the entire British football ecosystem.”
Sara Prowse, CEO of UA92, added,
“At UA92, we work closely with businesses to ensure our students are ready for thriving careers. This degree is tailor-made for a sport that has grown into a multi-billion-pound global industry.”
“It exemplifies UA92’s innovative approach to education, providing every student the opportunity to succeed. We’re not just preparing students for jobs — we’re shaping tomorrow’s leaders.”
The course’s distinctive 360-degree structure was developed after extensive consultation with key industry partners, including Manchester United FC, Salford City FC, Altrincham FC, the Manchester FA, and the English Football League.
Students will gain unrivalled insight into the inner workings of football clubs, benefiting from UA92’s partnership with Salford City. Opportunities include exclusive internships, live projects, work placements, mentorships, and guest lectures from industry leaders.
Learning is enriched by contemporary case studies such as Real Madrid’s stadium and estate redevelopment, Ryan Reynolds’ social media overhaul of Wrexham AFC, and Salford City FC’s rise from non-league football to the professional leagues. A core focus runs through the programme on how artificial intelligence can help clubs generate new revenue streams.
Reflecting the global nature of modern football, the degree covers leagues around the world and places strong emphasis on the rapidly expanding women’s game. With women’s football experiencing unprecedented international growth, graduates will be well-positioned to capitalise on this dynamic sector.
Students will also benefit from guest lectures by Gary Neville, the Class of ’92, and current football executives, gaining insights from both iconic players and leading industry figures.
Awarded by Lancaster University, the Business of Football degree will commence teaching this September.
Applications for the September 2025 intake are now open. UA92 offers multiple entry points throughout the year, including November, January, February, April, and June, providing flexible options for prospective students.
